In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
