A fatal ambush in the heart of Syria on Saturday morning resulted in the deaths of a pair of American troops and a US civilian translator, with a number of others injured, as stated by the US Department of Defense.

The assault on American forces in the historic town of Tadmur represents the initial event to inflict casualties following the fall of ex-leader Bashar al-Assad roughly a year prior.

"This assault occurred as the service members were carrying out a high-level meeting," a Pentagon spokesperson said. "Their mission was in support of on-going counter-ISIS / anti-terror operations in the area."

The attacker behind the shooting was eliminated by partner forces, as confirmed by a statement from the US defense secretary.

Specifics Kept Private For Privacy

US CENTCOM indicated that, as a matter of respect for the families and in line with standard procedure, the identities of the deceased personnel will be withheld until 24 hours after their families have been notified.

Initial accounts from Syrian state media and a war monitor said that gunfire erupted during a visit by US soldiers to the central town of Tadmur.

Varying Reports Emerge

According to a state-run media outlet, a pair of Syria's security force and a number of US personnel were injured in the incident. Those hurt were reportedly transported by aircraft to a garrison near the frontier with neighboring countries.

A spokesperson for Syria's interior ministry claimed a shooter linked to ISIS opened fire at the gate of a army position. Authorities are looking into whether the individual was a card-carrying member of the group or merely espoused its extreme ideology.

This spokesperson further denied a claim from a UK-based monitoring group that the gunman was a security member.

Continued American Deployment in Syria

The United States maintains a military presence deployed in eastern Syria as a component of a multinational alliance combating the Islamic State.

Despite being declared defeated in Syria in recent years, the group's sleeper cells continue to execute deadly attacks. UN estimates suggest the faction retains thousands of fighters in both Syria and Iraq.

US troops have previously been targeted in the past. Among the deadliest prior incidents occurred in 2019 in northern Syria, when an blast killed American soldiers and US civilians, among others.
